About us

“One more batch to go”Dutch by origin, French by name, but made in Australia. In 1957 Heiko Smit arrived in Australia from the Netherlands with little else but a steely determination to start a new life in his new country. Following on from his life as a baker in Holland, he forged a new career for himself starting out at one of Melbourne’s most celebrated cake shops, Paterson’s Cakes before branching out on his own.

“One more batch to go”Following a succession of wholesale cake shops throughout Melbourne, his most popular selling item, “Krentenbrood” (Dutch word meaning currant bread) soon caught the eye of a local distributor who saw its enormous potential. As such in 1982, they increased their volume and soon debuted in Safeway Supermarkets throughout Melbourne. Realising the importance of establishing a name to reflect the quality of this product Très Bon™ (French meaning Very Good) was born and to this day can lay claim to being the first company to introduce this very unique line of fruit bread to Australia.
Word of mouth soon reached Adelaide whereby a distributor also saw the potential and was quick to embrace and promote the product. This new found wholesale business soon saw Heiko’s eldest son Peter join him in firmly establishing itself as the manufacturer of Australia’s Number 1 Fruit Loaf.

“One more batch to go”Following his father’s retirement in 1991, Peter took the reigns and expanded the range to include an additional 8 lines. The original Continental Fruit Loaf maintains its position as the most popular selling line in Australia because of its appeal to not only the large Dutch population but the health conscious and is enjoyed by the old and young alike. To this day Peter still works the business including the manufacturing and is now joined by his wife who assists with marketing. This family owned business continues to grow with interest from overseas markets to export. 2007 marks 25 years for Très Bon™ as Australia’s No. 1 Fruit Loaf.
